Personal Statement

My goal, as a psychiatrist with expertise in geriatric psychiatry and addiction medicine, is to provide meaningful and evidence-based psychotherapeutic and/or pharmacologic interventions to those in need.

I am fortunate to collaborate with a world renowned group of multidisciplinary specialists to help promote a multifaceted treatment plan for my patients, including other psychiatrists, psychotherapists and neuropsychologists.

Biographical Info

Jimmy N Avari, M.D., is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Â鶹¸ßÇå and an Assistant Attending Psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center. Dr. Avari is the Training Director of the Â鶹¸ßÇå Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program and the Associate Residency Training Director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency.

Dr. Avari completed his psychiatry residency at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was selected as Chief Resident. He then completed his Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Dr. Avari is a well-recognized educator at Â鶹¸ßÇå, having served as the Training Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program and the Assistant Residency Training Director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency from 2014-2020. From 2020- 2021, Dr. Avari served as the Interim Residency Training Director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency and in 2022 was named the Associate Residency Training Director. During this time, he has continued in his role as the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Avari has also been involved in individual and group mentoring programs of residents, fellows, and junior faculty members.

Dr. Avari spent much of his career as an inpatient psychiatrist on the Addiction Recovery Service and the “Haven,” a general psychiatry unit that treats patients from an affluent socioeconomic background with a variety of psychiatric disorders. Dr. Avari was a leader in the planning and development of the NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit- an inpatient psychiatry unit designed to provide intensive assessment and comprehensive treatment to individuals during the most acute phase of a serious mental illness. In 2022, Dr. Avari was appointed to be the Division Director of Specialty Inpatient Services, which includes inpatient programming dedicated to the treatment of patients with substance use disorders, eating disorders, those with late-life illnesses, and the psychiatric intensive care unit and stepdown unit. He also directs the neuromodulation services at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center.

Dr. Avari’s clinical research focusses on the development of novel treatments of late-life psychiatric disorders. He has worked with the Weill Cornell Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry since 2010.

Dr. Avari has written extensively and published in many journals, including the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Academic Psychiatry. He has also written many book chapters and presented his work at many domestic and international conferences.
